How to Play NYT Strands
NYT Strands is a themed word search where every hidden word connects to the day's theme. Letters can connect in any direction — horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or in winding paths. The spangram is a special word that spans the entire grid touching both edges, always directly related to the theme.
Unlike Wordle and Connections, Strands doesn't penalize wrong guesses — finding non-theme words earns you hints instead. Explore freely and collect hints when you're stuck.
What Time Does NYT Strands Reset?
NYT Strands resets at midnight Eastern Time (ET) every day — the same fixed global time as Connections. For US players: midnight ET, 11 PM CT, 10 PM MT, 9 PM PT. We update within minutes of the reset.
How to Find the Spangram
- Think about the theme first — the spangram is usually the most obvious word related to today's theme
- Scan the edges — the spangram must touch both sides of the grid, so it always starts or ends near the border
- Look for longer words — the spangram is typically 7–10 letters, longer than most regular theme words
- Use corners as anchors — letters in corners often belong to the spangram or a short theme word
