How to Play NYT Connections
NYT Connections presents 16 words in a 4×4 grid. Find four groups of four words sharing a hidden theme. You get 4 mistakes. Yellow is easiest, Purple is hardest — deliberately designed to mislead you.
What Time Does NYT Connections Reset?
NYT Connections resets at midnight Eastern Time (ET) every day — a fixed global time unlike Wordle. For US players: midnight ET, 11 PM CT, 10 PM MT, 9 PM PT. We update this page within minutes of the midnight reset.
Connections Strategy
- Always start with Yellow — it's there to give you early confidence and clear the board
- Never start with Purple — it's designed to mislead. Save it for last
- Use elimination — confirm 3 groups and Purple becomes automatic
- Shuffle the board — seeing words in new positions often reveals hidden patterns
- Look for prefix/suffix patterns — "words that follow ___" or "words that precede ___" is the most common Purple trap
Why Is Connections Harder Than Wordle?
Wordle gives direct feedback after every guess. Connections gives you 16 words at once with no intermediate feedback — you manage four hidden patterns simultaneously while the NYT plants decoy words to mislead you across categories. The purple category especially trips up even experienced players every single day.
